Friends of Glass UK, M&S and Leeds City Council #RecyclingHero challenge

Friends of Glass UK launched initiative with Marks & Spencer and Leeds City Council to make consumers aware of the benefits of recycling glass.

Friends of Glass teams are working hard to educate and inspire the general public about the benefits of glass packaging all across Europe. Remember, by buying glass packaged products in supermarkets or local stores, you are advocating for a healthier life for you, your friends and your family! Each month, we’ll bring you news and updates on the activities happening throughout Europe, so that you can see the various ways in which Friends of Glass is driving the glass industry both online and in the real-world.

For the first country spotlight, we have chosen to highlight a fantastic activation by the Friends of Glass Team in the UK – focused on increasing glass recycling at a local level across the United Kingdom.

Together with Marks & Spencer and Leeds City Council, the UK team have launched an exciting initiative to enable consumers to better understand the need for glass packaging to be recycled after use. This partnership is all about making sure that consumers are even more aware of the benefits of recycling glass, as well as knowing just how easy it is to recycle (give your bottles and jars a quick rinse and recycle at your nearest glass bank)!

This is so important because last year, in the city of Leeds alone, disposing of glass in household bins cost the City over £1.5m – money that could have been spent on other local services. Another reason why recycling your glass jars and bottles is vital to the community that you live in – as well the planet!

Glass is endlessly and 100% recyclable: this is an important message for the whole of Europe!

So what does the partnership mean and how are people involved?

Well, from Sat 22 April until Sat 6 May consumers will be able to recycle bottles and jars at Marks & Spencer’s Moortown (Leeds, UK) store – there are specific decorated glass banks in the location in which you can place your used glass packaging.

The Friends of Glass UK Team have also been giving away reusable bags, which are perfect for carrying your items from the supermarket or local store!

On top of that, to celebrate the special glass banks, Friends of Glass UK are giving away Apple iPad Mini 2s to FIVE glass recycling heroes. Consumers are asked to simply share a photo of themselves being a #RecyclingHero at ANY Leeds glass bank for a chance to win!

Here are a handful of inspiring entries that we’ve received so far:
