Glass Never Goes Out of Style

Glass Never Goes Out of Style

We are big fans of haberdashery jars. Glass is the perfect material to display and store pretty little things. It works especially well for organising your sewing kit and sorting out all your buttons, ribbons and pins.

Recently we met a new friend of glass, Ali Dwight, who runs Wooden Wedge Upholstery, a company that turns old pieces of furniture into something unique that’s made to stand the test of time. At the heart of the business is an ethos of reducing waste and re-using things we already have, instead of buying mass-produced items that get thrown away after a short time. This belief is behind everything that’s produced, including her latest line of haberdashery gifts, presented unsurprisingly in reusable gorgeous glass jars..

“I’ve always loved haberdashery” says Ali. “As a child, I’d spend hours playing with my Nan’s collection of buttons stored in an old glass jar. This inspired me to create a range of little jars of colour-coordinated haberdashery items – an affordable but beautiful product where the contents are easily visible and where the packaging won’t end up in landfill. Glass was the natural choice for me when creating these small gifts, as it has also played a part in my family history. I come from Knottingley, an old mining town in West Yorkshire, where a glass factory has created jobs for local people for years, including friends, my Aunty, Uncle and Great Uncle (who was a glass blower).”

Ali says that she chose Orcio jam jars as they are a beautiful shape and ideal for her customers to use again when the haberdashery items have been used up. She likes to think each jar may be given a new life as a vase, to store pickles, jams, bubble-bath, sweeties or even to store a new gift that will be passed on to someone else!

Have you ever passed on a jar filled by you with something nice to anyone? If so, what did you put in it? Tweet us @friendsglassuk or get in touch on Facebook.
