Bitter, bland, cool, salty, sour, spicy, sweet…Can Europe be defined by these taste profiles?

At Friends of Glass, we’re all fans of glass’ power to preserve the taste of your food and drink. It’s because we understand how important food and drink is in European culture; the differences of tastes across Europe, and the importance of preserving these tastes as part of our cultural heritage. But how would you define your taste, and more particularly, the Taste of Europe?

That’s where we need you to add some flavour from your own country, and that’s why today we have launched our interactive Taste Map of Europe. We want to find out about the Tastes of Europe – how they change and interact from country to country – and we’re asking you to join us in this pursuit.

To get us started, we worked together with globally renowned taste experts such as Andreas Larsson, Swedish Wine Sommelier, voted Best Sommelier of the World; Arno Steguweit, Europe’s first Water Sommelier from Germany; Caroline Furstoss, French Wine Sommelier 2014; Professor Giorgio Calabrese, a renowned Italian Nutritionist; Guillermo Cruz, voted Spain’s Best Sommelier in 2014; Jane Peyton, UK Beer Sommelier of the Year 2014-2015; and Christophe Baert, chef and Vice-President of in the Belgian Euro-Toques Association, to begin this journey.

Together, we created an initial Taste Map, full of expert insights linking typical products to various European regions examining how these tastes change as we go from country to country. Would it surprise you to know that Italian and Spanish wines are mellow and flavoured, while German wines take on a distinct bitter taste?
